Do I need a lawyer for a speeding ticket?

While you do not technically need a lawyer, you will benefit greatly from hiring one. A lawyer can save time, money, and points on your license. A lawyer will be able to appear in court on your behalf and should be able to negotiate a lower fine and penalties, which can save you a lot of money.

Can I beat a speeding ticket?

While you can sometimes beat a speeding ticket, it is generally not cost effective to challenge it. There are ways in which you might beat the ticket is if the officer who gave you the ticket does not show up, a rarity, or if you successfully take the radar out of the evidence. The latter only strengthens your case, but it does not ensure a victory. In general, it is better to strike a deal than to challenge a ticket. However, if you have previous points or your occupation requires a clean record, it might be necessary to have a trial.

Will my insurance go up if I get a speeding ticket?

Usually the insurance rates will go up, but a good lawyer can reduce the rate at which it increases. Insurance may go up when you get points on your license, so depending on fast you were going and how many points you get, your insurance may increase.

How long do points stay on my record?

Points stay on your record for 18 months after the date of the offense. However, insurance companies may increase your rates for 36 months after the date of conviction.

What if I do not answer my ticket?

If you do not show up to answer your ticket, your license may be suspended and sometimes automatically found guilty.

Should I try to beat the ticket if I know I’m guilty?

You should fight the case because it is the burden of the prosecutors to prove you are guilty; you do not have to prove your innocence.
