What to Expect in Court

Tip: One of the first things to do once you receive a speeding ticket is entering your plea. Your failure to do so can result in a suspension of your license. You have the option to plead either guilty or not guilty.

Sign-In: Upon arriving to court, it is important that you check-in with the court clerk. Failure to notifying the court clerk that you are here for your court date could result in your case not being called.

Dress Code: Although there is no official dress code, we highly recommend all litigants to dress formally. Many judges frown upon those individuals who come to court in shorts, tank tops, or other similar items.

Court Tip: It is always a good policy to come to court prepared. Having the court notice in court is advisable. It will help the court ascertain the most important information about your case quickly.

Points Information

In New York State, there is no such thing as a 1-point violation. While cell phone violations are 5 points, speeding violations range from 3-11 points. The following chart shows the break down of these points with respect to speed.

Once a driver has 11 points on his/her license, the license will get suspended. Please keep in mind, driving with a suspended license is a crime. If you are pulled over with a suspended license, the officer can arrest you and impound your car.

Points will affect a driver’s privilege to drive for 18 months from the date in which the ticket was issued. In other words, the points do not run from the date of the conviction. They run from the moment the officer issued the summons.
