Analysis and Commentary: The Town of Belfast is named after Belfast, Ireland, and was first settled in 1804. The Town has a population of 1,663 and covers 36.5 square miles, according to the U.S. Census (2010). The Genesee Valley Canal is located at the Town of Belfast, and the Rail & Titsworth Canal Warehouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Historically, the Town was served at one time by three railroads; but is more famous for being the location where John L. Sullivan trained with Belfast resident, William Muldoon, in the training barns he’d built. Sullivan went on to fight Jake Kilrain in 1889 at Richburg, Mississippi, in the last bare-knuckle boxing championship that went 72 rounds, before Sullivan was declared the winner. The training barns are now in the Hall of Fame.
Town Court is in session every Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. and handles mostly traffic violations and some misdemeanors. District Attorney’s night is every 4th Tuesday of each month beginning at 5 p.m.
