Route 219 a Speed Trap?
Route 219 stretches from Pennsylvania into New York. Many driver’s crossing over the border lose sight of the change in speed limits and find themselves facing a hefty speeding ticket. This popular stretch of road has been recently cited as a large stream of fine revenue to Carrollton Town. An article from the Olean Times Herald states, “the town of Carrollton pulled in speeding fines of more than $301,000 last year, more than any other community in Cattaraugus or Allegany counties.” This notion that the town is trying to raise fine revenue is controverted by town officials. To the contrary, they state that public safety is the paramount reason for the volume of tickets issued.
Cost More Than a Fine
Many drivers issued a speeding summons are unaware of the hidden costs behind a speeding conviction. This is in large part due to the fact that a local court ticket does not state the how much the fine will be. Many drivers assume the fine will be nominal and simply plead guilty. They are later shocked to find that their ticket has cost them hundreds in fines payable to the court, hundreds in penalties payable to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, and thousands in insurance increases.
The maximum and minimum of a fine payable to a court is controlled by NYS statute but executed by the judge presiding over the case. In other words, the law provides the parameters for which the fine can be and the judge decided how much to impose.
